Govt earmarks N$600 mil for traditional leaders’ vehicle fleet
WINDHOEK – Traditional leaders will receive a new set of four-wheel drive vehicles to replace vehicles bought six years ago. The vehicles would be purchased as soon as Treasury has unveiled the national budget for the 2015/2016 financial year. The Deputy Minister of Regional and Local Government, Housing and Rural Development Priscilla Beukes made the announcement yesterday when she handed over two Toyota Land Cruiser Prado vehicles to the Chairperson of the Council of Traditional Leaders Immanuel Kauluma Elifas and his deputy Gaob Immanuel /G?seb. The vehicles were purchased at a cost of over N$600 000 each. Beukes said the new fleet would replace the old fleet bought in 2009 at a cost of N$600 million. Government avails four-wheel drive vehicles to traditional leaders to use in the execution of their official duties as traditional leaders. Government also takes charge of the fleet’s maintenance and fuel expenses. According to /G?seb, the government has a fuel scheme whereby traditional leaders are issued with N$3 000 quarterly. “This N$3 000 covers fuel expenses for three month to enable the leaders to [do] their work, as they will be able to navigate their areas and to attend to important event such as attending the council meeting of all leaders,” explained /G?seb. He, however, said should the leaders exhaust their fuel allowance, they have to fork out from their pockets to fuel the cars until the next cycle. Meanwhile, /G?seb has appealed to the government to train the traditional leaders’ drivers, as he says it is very risky that some of them are inexperienced thus can cause accidents. “They (drivers) must receive proper training, as some drivers just know how to drive but they don’t have experience,” he said.
