Govt rakes in N$5.71 million in land revenue
By Obrein Simasiku WINDHOEK-The Ministry of Land and Resettlement through the deeds registry has collected over N$5.71million as state revenue. The revenue was generated from 23 522 deeds documents that were digitised during 2014/2015, with an addition of 11 729 registered during the current financial year, Lands Minister Alpheus !Naruseb said last week. According to!Naruseb, this followed after the implementation of the Computerised Deeds Registration Systems, which has increased efficiency in property registration, particularly with the registration of urban and commercial land. He added that the Deeds Bill has passed through the Cabinet Committee on Legislation and will be tabled in parliament before the end of this financial year. The computerisation of the Deeds Registry is still ongoing, the minister said, urging the responsible directorate to develop a road map to show the exact steps and resources required for digitisation. “The is no doubt that the digitised property registration system will facilitate speedy registration and tracking of property lodged,” !Naruseb said. Noting that there is always a rush to the deeds office towards the end of each financial year, !Naruseb urged clients who deal with property registration to avoid last-minute rush and insisted that management should handle the projects with the same speed throughout the year. It is said that the ministry of lands has completed the first draft of the Boundary Delimitation and Demarcation Bill and it is awaiting management’s input. In addition the demarcation, surveying and computation of the coordinates of the rectilinear boundary between Namibia and Botswana have been completed and Namibia has submitted a draft treaty to Botswana. Meanwhile the two countries have requested the African Union (AU) border program to provide technical support to draw up and finalise the treaty, said !Naruseb.
