Grade 10 Failures to Get Real Second Chance
"By Anna Ingwafa OMUTHIYA Swapo Party secretary general, Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana, announced that learners who failed Grade 10 last year would be given a chance to repeat this year. According to Iivula-Ithana, who also serves as the Attorney General, the decision was made at a recent Swapo Party Central Committee meeting. The party's Central Committee decided that schools should accommodate Grade 10 repeaters by introducing afternoon classes that would accommodate them. The large number of learners who failed to make it to Grade 11 prompted the decision. The Namibia National Student Organisation has expressed concern about the situation saying it was dismayed by the results whose pass rate is below 50 percent. Iivula-Ithana called on teachers to allow learners who fail Grade 10 to repeat. She also made a call on all Swapo Party supporters to believe in democracy but not in guns and stones and to report people who cause political disturbance to the police. She said the Director for National Society for Human Rights, Phil ya Nangoloh, does not have to protect human rights in the country and only the police can do so. Iivula-Ithana was speaking at a Swapo Party rally that saw the launch of the party's campaign for the local authority election for Omuthiya last Saturday. She called on all voters to strive for democracy and to keep Omuthiya under Swapo leadership that she said had planned and designed the town and not the opposition. She said opposition parties are calling for voters to give them Omuthiya, ""How can we give them Omuthiya? Omuthiya is well-designed by the Swapo Party Government and don't allow them to sit in those offices."" The registration of voters for Omuthiya local authority election started this week. At least four parties - Swapo Party, RDP, CoD and DTA - are contesting. "
