Gun owner arrested over shooting incident

RUNDU - The police in Kavango East have arrested a man who they say unlawfully and intentionally permitted his licensed shotgun to be in the possession of another man without written permission.

The shotgun was recently used at a farm in the Ndonga Linena constituency where a farmworker shot and wounded a man and his dog. The accused allegedly mistook the victim for a jackal. “We have opened the case, (Ndiyona CR 07/01/2021). Contravening arms and ammunition Act 7 of 1996, Sec 8.1 (A) (ii).

Permitting of an arm to be possessed by another person without a written statement from a licence holder, endorsed by a person acting under the authority of the inspector general of the police for such purpose,” said Chief Inspector Ewald Kavara who confirmed the case.
The gun owner, who is currently in police custody and the suspect who used the gun, are due to appear in court today.

The shooting suspect has been charged with attempted murder, contravening the arms and ammunition act as well as for discharging a firearm. The incident happened on Wednesday last week at about 19h00 at Karuko farm.
