Hamunyela through to semi-finals... Junias in quarterfinals
Windhoek Namibia’s young boxing sensation, Mathias Hamunyela, yesterday delivered yet another sterling performance to dispatch Imad Ahyoud in the men’s quarterfinals of the 49kg category to reach the semifinals of the African Olympic Qualifiers in Yaoundé, Cameroon. The semifinals are scheduled for tomorrow and the hard-punching Namibian boxing ace will again be expected do well and hopefully reach the finals. On another positive note, as expected, Commonwealth Games silver medalist and All Africa Games runner-up Jonas Junias also did the country proud yesterday when he defeated Egyptian boxer Eslam Ahmed Aly Mohamed to progress to the quarterfinals of the men’s 64kg category. Junias and Hamunyela are the only two Namibian boxers remaining in the competition, with the other five having all failed to advance further. Namibia Boxing Federation (NBF) president Benjamin Rabang yesterday said he was highly impressed with the performance of both boxers, saying he is confident they would progress to the finals. “I’m really very happy with the news. The boys have done the country proud and their chances of reaching the finals are very vast, so they should just remain focused and finish the job at hand. It’s not always easy fighting against North African boxers, but I have faith in our boys. They will make it, that I know for sure,” Rabang said.
