2015-09-02Staff Report 2 Windhoek Excited learners of the Havana Primary School in the Samora Machel Constituency were eager to learn more about the United Nations Organisation (UNO) structures in Namibia and their aims. Staff from the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Windhoek visited a number of local primary schools earlier this month under its outreach programme UN4U, in order to provide learners with a basic understanding of the UN, its various agencies, and the role that the organisation plays in Namibia. The visit also aimed to convey the message that the UN is an organisation that not only works for the people, but also helps develop countries such as Namibia. Despite the fact that many of the school’s learners have heard about the UN before and could recall that UN stands for an international organisation, they were grateful for the information programme that the UNIC outreach programme brought to them. Learners were quick to note that almost every single country in the world is a UN member. Although many learners at school could not explain the role of the Secretary General of the United Nations right away, some could identify Kofi Annan, who served as the Secretary General during the first decade of the twenty-first century within much difficulty. 2015-09-02Staff Report 2
