Hindjou wants govt to lift land sales moratorium
2016-06-23Staff Report 2 Okahandja Okahandja mayor Congo Hindjou has appealed to government to lift the land sales moratorium at the town, saying it is having an adverse effect on residents Speaking to New Era recently, Hindjou said that currently the town has a number of unserviced plots that it wants to allocate to first-time buyers after being serviced, but due to the restriction by the line ministry the municipality is unable to do so. According to him, due to “irregularities of the previous council” late last year the town council received a letter from the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Sophia Shaningwa, instructing the council to put all land sales at the town on hold. “It is not that we condone the irregularities or mismanagement of resources but what we want is for the line ministry to fast track the process so that we can provide land to those in need,” Hindjou said. Speaking recently at the 120th commemoration of the Battle of Otjunda and the execution of Chief Kahimemua Nguvauva, Hindjou assured President Hage Geingob that the town is ready to support the Harambee Prosperity Plan. Hindjou also pleaded with the Ministry of Higher Education to bring universities, colleges and vocational training centres to residents of Okahandja. Currently residents of Okahandja have to travel to Windhoek to access such services, which is a costly process. “We have young people travelling to and from Okahandja on a regular basis to access higher education facilities in Windhoek and this process is very expensive, especially as these are learners without any income,” Hindjou said. 2016-06-23Staff Report 2
