2008-02-29Staff Report 2 By Dr Moses Amweelo WE have experienced major floods in the northern regions from January to February 2008. According to rainfall figures released by the Meteorological Service, most regions in the north of Namibia have received above average rains this season. At Katima Mulilo in the Caprivi Region, 753.6mm of rain has been recorded between October last year and end of last month. Ondangwa in the Oshana Region recorded 237mm over the same period. The rainfall figures for January are well above the average figures for that month for most places in the North. The Minister of Information and Broadcasting said that roads, bridges, culverts and other vital infrastructure were damaged and a large number of people are affected by the heavy rains and floods emanating from the Cuvelai river system in southern Angola. According to the Emergency Management Unit's (EMU) flood report, at Oshakati 841 flood victims - 641 adults and 200 children - are being taken care of by the Oshakati Town Council and the Oshana Regional Council. In the Omusati Region, at least 44 schools have been suspended, more than 30 clinics are inaccessible and malaria and waterborne diseases pose a serious threat.
