Jailed for ripping open baby’s stomach
Keetmanshoop A resident of Aroab, who was accused of ripping open his three-month-old baby’s stomach and stabbing his girlfriend with a sheep shears, has been sentenced to five years in prison. Piet Smith, 38, was found guilty on one count of attempted murder and one count of assault with intent to do grievously bodily harm, and subsequently sentenced to five years imprisonment by magistrate Murray Shikongo at Aroab during last Friday’s court session. Smith was found guilty of the crimes he committed in 2014, after he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend with a sheep shears, and ripped open the stomach of the couple’s baby, after he was apparently refused sexual intercourse. It is alleged Smith attacked Evelyn Smith, who is supposedly his girlfriend and cousin, after she had refused to have sexual intercourse with him. Media reports at the time of the incident in March 2014, indicate that Smith arrived at around 02h00 on a Saturday morning at a house he shared with Evelyn and their baby and made sexual advances to Smith. Smith then apparently refused to have sex with him, as it was too late and she had already been sleeping by that time, and her refusal angered Smith and resulted in him inflicting a stab wound to her back, while ripping open the stomach of the infant. Although the stab wound was reported to have caused a spinal cord injury, which paralysed Evelyn Smith in one of her legs, both she and her daughter are now said to be in good condition
