//Karas must improve school results - Basson
2016-01-12Staff Report 2 Keetmanshoop //Karas outshines other regions in Grade 10 results’, read the headline of a daily newspaper back in 2005, but it is the kind of headline that the people in this region have not seen in a long time. The performance of Grade 10 and 12 learners in the region leaves much to be desired, as in recent years the region’s academic ranking has dropped from the top of the academic league tables to very near the bottom. //Karas Regional Governor Lucia Basson is calling for a collective effort in order to turn things around. Speaking from her office this week, Basson could not specify exactly what went wrong in the region’s education system and where, but said it requires concerted efforts from everyone to remedy the current situation. “We need collective effort to work out something that will uplift the standard of our education,” she said. She went on to single out parents’ involvement in their children’s education as one important factor that could ensure good performance. She says parents in her region seem not grasp the importance of being closely involved in their children’s education. “Parents’ involvement is just not there,” she said. She also lamented the mushrooming of shebeens and clubs in the region and pointed to learners’ involvement in alcohol abuse as one of the factors that may be hindering the performance of schools in the region. With regard to education conferences held annually in an attempt to better the academic results - although these are very important platforms to share ideas - she does not believe all people that should be there are. “We need all stakeholders to be there. I don’t think the right people are invited to the education conferences,” she explained. The //Karas Region is currently ranked second from the bottom in terms of the national Grade 10 examination results for 2015. Educators in the region have their fingers crossed that the Grade 12 ordinary level result – due out on Thursday – will be better. Governor Basson says after consultation with various people in the region, she plans to deliver her maiden State of the Region Address next month. “It’s not my story, it’s a regional story,” she said. 2016-01-12Staff Report 2
