Katima prison escapees still at large
KATIMA MULILO – The Namibian police have not yet rearrested 13 trial-awaiting prisoners who escaped from the Katima Mulilo Police Station holding cells last week, apart from two Zambian nationals who were apprehended hours after the escape. Police regional spokesperson, Sergeant Kisco Sitali, noted however that the police were still hot on the heels of the escapees but there was a strong likelihood they had all crossed into neighbouring Zambia. “After they escaped they moved in small groups. We received a report yesterday (last Thursday) that one of them, a Namibian national was arrested by the Zambian police in Livingstone,” said Sitali. In an incident that left the police with egg on their faces, the suspected criminals managed to break free from the holding cells by cutting through the ceiling with a saw. They then stringed together pieces of blankets as their ticket to freedom by using it to climb onto the roof. The fugitives face serious charges ranging from murder to housebreaking, rape, stock theft and poaching, among others. Six of the escapees are Namibians, six are Zambian nationals and one is Congolese. According to Sergeant Sitali, the Congolese is said to have led one group of escapees and financed the getaway car which was waiting for the fugitives across the river in Zambia. Sitali cautioned the public to be on high alert as the suspects might be dangerous and appealed for information on any suspicious movements that might lead to their rearrest. “We appeal to the public to be very careful. These are suspected criminals. We also want to plead with the public to please report any suspicious movements so that we rearrest these criminals,” implored Sitali.
