Katja & Friends Next Week at UN Plaza
By Kae Matundu-Tjiparuro WINDHOEK The UN Plaza in Katutura is billed for a multi-star performance of mixed genre of music comprising the Oviritje music genre, omuhiva (Ovaherero/Ovambanderu male traditional dance) and its female version, outjina. It is all happening on Friday, 24 November, thanks to the J&P Group and the Rising Voices Productions, a new Katutura-based music promotion company. Titled Uana na Katja (Meet Katja), the extravaganza is meant to further endear Katja, the new Oviritje genre offering from the RVP stable, to her growing corps of hangers-on and Oviritje lovers. Katja already has a CD to her name titled 1000 km/h being the speed at which its producers intended it to sell. Five hundred CDs went within the first two weeks of its release. The CD moulds Oviritje with jazz and is the first Oviritje CD in which band with full instruments backs the singers. The event lines up such traditional household names like Vevangua Muuondjo (Outjina) and Uanjonoka Tjongarero (Omuhiva) flavouring the event with a good dose of cultural flavour to blend modern traditional sounds as per Erich Mahua, a past 'NBC Music Makers' winner with the song, Tjevera Ehinga (Stay Away from Aids), Big Ben Kandukira of Kinikini fame and the Millennium, an Oviritje genre musical group. With outjina and omuhiva, the rural cultural setting is translocated right into the heart of the City's African township. Tickets for the event, which starts at 19h00, sell for N$20,00 per ticket and are only available at the door/gate.
