Katti-sponsored tourney breathes new life into Kombat
2015-11-09Staff Report 2 Kombat All the traumas of the last couple of weeks concerning the immediate future of this once copper-rich mining town were temporarily forgotten as residents flocked en masse to the Kombat Rugby Club stadium to ease their frustrations. Kind-hearted business mogul Knowledge Katti is doubtlessly a man who walks the talk and has done it again. This time, the adorable young man with the Midas touch brought the village of Kombat to a virtual standstill by sponsoring a football and volleyball tourney for local and other teams from the surrounding areas. Five teams entered the primary school category that saw hosts Kombat and neighbours Otavi fielding two teams each, while Shalom Primary completed the line-up. The youngsters displayed talent way belying their tender age and had the appreciative crowd on the edge of their seats, dishing out exciting football never witnessed in this neck of the woods in a long time. After marathon matches in the preliminary stages, Otavi-A emerged victorious – defeating the hosts in the rotary of penalties following a goalless draw. The boys from Otavi kept their nerve to prevail 4-1 to take first prize. In the senior football division, it was a three-horse race between hosts Kombat Police Force (Nampol), Sabre Eleven (a team of geologists working on the periphery of Kombat), and the exciting young outfit comprising of trainees from the Rietfontein Vocational Training Centre under the wing of the National Youth Service. Led by enterprising young midfielder Jaco van Staden, 18, the students were in mean mood and showed their intentions early on when they dispatched hosts Kombat Nampol by 3 goals to 2 in an action-packed match to set up a thrilling final against Sabre Eleven. However, the students proved too hot a potato to handle for their out-of-sorts opponents – easily waltzing past the big frame geologists 3-1 to claim the trophy. “We are thankful to Mr Katti. He has done wonders for the inhabitants of this village since he took ownership of the administration. Many people despaired when the mine closed down its operations in 2008 but he (Katti) has given us renewed hope,” said one of the attendants with a big smile on her face. 2015-11-09Staff Report 2
