Katutura School Benefits from Goodwill
"By Frederick Philander WINDHOEK Martti Ahtisaari Primary School is one of the schools in Katutura yearly struggling with parents that cannot afford the children's school fees due to the worsening economic situation in the country. This was said in an off-the-cuff remark by the school's principal, Hermanus Bock, when yesterday he received a welcome donation of teaching materials from the Windhoek Rotary Club. The school received a third delivery of textbooks, teaching aids and posters, art and craft ideas and techniques, English educational games, posters and physical education equipment to the tune of N$30 000 as part of a three-year matching grant scheme that exists between the Pasila Rotary Club in Finland and Rotary International. According to Bock, his school has been suffering arrears in school fees of more than N$100 000 over the past two years because parents just cannot afford to pay. ""However, we have reached the final stage of the three-year matching grant scheme, which has tremendously benefited the school - I can without any doubt confirm. The equipment and various educational items will have a profound and major impact on the lives of thousands of learners. Teachers and learners will enjoy and appreciate the availability of this teaching material and aids in the classroom situation,"" Bock said. Ken Howe, the president of the Windhoek Rotary Club, handed over the much-needed educational material and equipment to the principal in the presence of some of the learners, who are to benefit from them."
