Kawana would name and shame irresponsible fathers
Feckless fathers who refuse to pay child support would be “named and shamed” in newspapers and television across the country if Justice Minister Albert Kawana gets his way. Contributing to the budget debate on the gender sector in the National Assembly last week, Kawana said he has been fighting for a law that would help name and shame absentee parents. “Now, that I am a Minister of Justice I will make sure that this law is introduced so that you can know who those irresponsible fathers are,” he said. “We will name and shame them so that women can know who to go for and who not to go for,” said Kawana. Meanwhile, Vice-President Nickey Iyambo last week paid an emotional farewell to the National Assembly, saying that he has enjoyed his time in the august house. By law, the VP would not sit in parliament. Iyambo had to resign from parliament in order to assume his VP duties. “For everything there is a reason, and a time for every matter under heaven, and now is the time for me, imbued with sadness of nostalgia to say goodbye,” said Iyambo. He advised incoming MPs to follow the excellent example of respect and co-operation “we have shown you”. “No person, group, institutions or ideologies are greater than the collective interest of Namibia and wellbeing of its citizens, pursue that art all times,” he said. He also commended Founding Father Sam Nujoma, former President Hifikepunye Pohamba and President Hage Geingob for the trust they have bestowed upon him and having prepared him over the years to serve the Namibian nation in public office, in this house and now in the executive.
