2015-03-02Staff Report 2 WINDHOEK - Residents of Khomasdal’s Diamant Street are up in arms over a sewerage drain that was left uncovered for several days. According to residents, most of whom are elderly, this resulted in an unattended manhole quickly filling up with sewerage water and overflowing into the streets to cause an unbearable stench. One of the residents, Arnold Slinger, told New Era he made several calls to the municipality’s Water and Waste Water Division but to no avail. He said he even went to the Khomasdal office to report the matter, but nothing was done. “This shows you the regard the City of Windhoek has for residents in so-called poor areas,” lamented another resident. He said the municipality is quick to cut off water when people are in arrears, but sluggish on service delivery. There are perpetual streams of foul smelling water overflowing in the area, the residents complained, adding that it normally takes the municipality two weeks to attend to complaints. On enquiry at the Water and Waste Water Division, New Era was referred to the municipality’s public relations office. The municipal spokesperson Joshua Amukugo said he would look into the matter, when he was contacted for comment. He however expressed concern over the issue and said it is not the municipality’s policy to leave sewerage drains unattended to as this could pose a health hazard.
