2015-09-21Staff Report 2 Windhoek The University of Namibia (Unam) has started an internal investigation to support police efforts in tracing the killers of a university student who was shot and killed in cold blood on Friday night. Redney Gariseb, 20, was in the company of two male students on their way back to Unam from Baines shopping complex in Pionierspark when three males reportedly attacked them. The students tried to run away, but Gariseb was shot, stumbled and fell to the ground. The accounting student originally hailed from Walvis Bay and was living on campus at the time of his murder. Unam spokesperson John Haufiku said the offices of the dean of students, as well as estate services and security have investigated the scene where Gariseb’s body was found. Haufiku said they are compiling a safety strategy for the university management to consider. “Although the university alone cannot stop the violence that looms in our city, we will not lie idle when precious lives of students are put at risk. We assure all parents and students that this matter is receiving the highest priority,” Haufiku said. Namibian police spokesperson Slogan Matheus said the police are working round the clock to trace the suspects and explained that the attackers chased and shot at the students with a pistol. One of the students, Redney, was then struck by a bullet in the back. He was later declared dead at the scene. Matheus confirmed that the two other students managed to escape unhurt and the assailants did not manage to steal anything from them. Haufiku said the university community grieves and sympathises with the family and friends of late Redney Gariseb. “We cannot claim to understand their loss. We can only imagine their pain and sympathise with them.” He said when a child is robbed across the street from one’s house, any good parent would feel personally responsible and this is exactly how the university management feels. He said although the killing of Gariseb took place some 350 metres from campus premises, the university will have to act to counter the threat to students.
