Lingua reflects on 21 years of educating

Maria Haipinge

A total of 760 qualifications were conferred by the International Training College-Lingua last week. This year’s graduation took place under the theme, ‘Access, Equity Diversity and Inclusion in Education: 21 years reflection’.

The founder and managing director of Lingua, Ingrid Kloppers-Mettler, narrated how she started Lingua 21 years ago with only N$32 in her account, without collaborations, surrounded by strong and consolidated competitors.

“As for Lingua College, the next 21 years will see our geographic footprint expand – and so will our ability to grow and prosper. Our ambition is to see all rise higher and shine even brighter,” she added.

Kloppers-Mettler believes Lingua is well-placed to face the future, citing plans to expand with new departments, construction of a new campus and a health facility to train and provide employment for health students, as well as a teaching centre for child development students and an entrepreneurial hub for future entrepreneurs, among other plans.

“No one knows for sure what future jobs will be, but if we can recognise them early and be innovate, the sky is the limit for all of us.”

Mariental mayor Cherien Aletha Kock was one of the graduates who obtained a qualification in travel and tourism. Another travel and tourism graduate Pahee Mate from Swakopmund said her journey was a slippery slide, but she was happy she made it.

“Study hard; focus on your studies. I know out there entertainment will call, but just finish studying first,” she advised prospective students.

Amy Classen, a business administration graduate, said the pressure was a lot, and she too was glad she made it. “No matter what the challenges are – honestly, I would say don’t give up. And also, just enjoy; being a student is a nice space of one’s life, especially when you’re a young adult,” she added.

Johannes Hamundjembo, who qualified in office administration and was one of the top performers, said he could have done better. “My advice is to never give up on whatever challenges you may face. In all paths that we walk, there are always speed bumps. Always push forward, persevere in whatever you do and show determination,” he urged.
