Man Fatally Stabs Friend in Quarrel
By Charles Tjatindi WALVIS BAY - A Kuisebmond resident was arrested after allegedly stabbing his friend to death at a local shebeen last weekend. The incident took place in the early hours of Saturday at Flakes Bar in Kuisebmond. The suspect, Richard Doeseb, who has since pleaded guilty in court on a charge of murder, noted that he committed the crime in self-defence. He claimed that his friend charged at him during an argument. According to the police charge sheet, the victim, who was only identified as Goaseb was stabbed on the left side of the chest. Police believe the incident was sparked by excessive intake of alcohol. In other crimes in the region, two suspects were arrested in separate incidents on charges of illegal possession of drugs. Samuel Naobeb was arrested by the Police's Drug Enforcement Unit at a fuel station in Karibib after cannabis valued at over N$3 000 was found in his possession. The police were apparently tipped off by a member of the public, as Naobeb attempted to hitch a ride at the fuel station with his 'package'. The second suspect was arrested in Swakopmund during a police operation. He was found with cocaine valued at N$600 in Swakopmund's Mondesa residential area, where he was arrested. Police operations at Swakopmund also led to the arrest and charging of five people on counts of driving while under the influence of alcohol. Wessel Bredenhahn (22), Curt Rabald (51), Leon Beukes (45), Jana van Zyl (21), and Andre Theron (42), appeared in the Swakopmund Magistrate's Court earlier this week, where they all pleaded guilty. They were each fined N$5 000, and got their licenses suspended for three months. According to the charge sheet, they are all residents of Swakopmund. Also on the regional crime scene, a mother and her baby died and 11 people were injured last Saturday, when a mini bus they were traveling in overturned. The accident happened between Uis and Henties Bay. According to sources at the scene, 10 of the injured people were transferred to the Henties Bay State Hospital. Another woman and her baby also sustained serious injuries and were initially admitted to the Swakopmund State Hospital before being transferred to the Windhoek State Hospital, fearing serious head injuries to the baby. The names of the deceased could not be released as their next of kin had not been informed. It is not clear what caused the vehicle to overturn. In another incident, a man sustained slight injuries when two vehicles collided in front of the Walvis Bay Police Station. A woman also sustained slight injuries in a separate accident when a car in which she was a passenger hit a road sign near Kuisebmond bridge. It is suspected that she was not wearing a seatbelt when the accident occurred.
