Man guns down wife and son
Rundu Ndiyona settlement in Rundu was left reeling in shock on Friday evening after a man gunned down his wife and seven-year-old son, following an acrimonious argument with the wife that went on all afternoon. The man, aged 45 years, handed himself to law enforcement officers after committing the fatal crime. “Witnesses confirmed that the fight between the two [husband and wife] started in the afternoon around 13:00,” said Rundu Detective Chief Inspector Chrispin Mubebo, adding that the man was scheduled to appear in court today. The incident happened in the early hours of Friday evening at around 19:20. Ndiyona settlement is in Ndiyona Constituency of Kavango East Region. Mubebo said the man shot his wife twice. The first bullet wounded her on the left lower arm and the second bullet struck her on the left side of her jaw, killing her instantly. He then apparently shot his son twice in the head. The boy was rushed in a critical condition to the Rundu State Hospital, by a private car, which was nearby when the shooting took place. He died at around 08h00 on Saturday, making it a double murder. The wife was identified as 33-year-old Rosalia Shirenge and the son as Mutero Alexius Vipanda. The people of the small Ndiyona settlement are now trying to understand why it happened, saying the couple were good people. “These were good people, it’s a tragedy for the community. Our condolences go to the family,” said one of the neighbours. Mubebo said the man used a Berreta pistol to shoot the wife and son and the pistol was found with one bullet in the chamber, when the police recovered it from the scene.
