Martial artist eager to do film stunts

Terence Mukasa

Martial artist, Willem Gaoaseb wants to see more action and combat movies in locally-produced films, and thus decided to dip into the film industry to provide such. With his martial arts training, Gaoaseb (21) is eager to do stunts for local films, saying there is little to no action movies being produced in Namibia.

“I have seen a huge gap in the market for action movies, and besides that, many young people are interested in film production, hence this will benefit them in many ways. It will reduce alcohol abuse, because many young people turn to alcohol to help them forget about their financial and other problems,” he told VIBEZ!

The action, marvel and fantasy movie enthusiast said he has been doing martial arts since he was a child, and also attended capoeira (a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, and music) classes. He could, however, not finish training because of a lack of money, but turned to online classes.

Gaoaseb believes he could bring a change to Namibia’s film industry at large, and, at the same time, provide the youth a platform to express themselves through action movies.

“I need to give the children a better view on life, with a vision of becoming someone who will bring change to Namibia.”

Gaoaseb said movies such as Kung Fu and Avengers sparked his interest in doing action movie stunts with the martial skills he has.

He is inspired by the Yuri Boyka, the main antagonist in the ‘Undisputed II’ series, as well as Donnie Yen Ji-dan. Played by actor Scott Adkins, Boyka is a professional Russian prison fighter, while Yen is a Hong Kong actor, martial artist, film director, producer, action choreographer, and multiple-time world wushu tournament champion. Yen is one of Hong Kong’s top action stars.

Gaoaseb is currently working with the youth in Okuryangava, and has thus far produced a few action clips shot in Windhoek’s Zoopark, and these are on YouTube.
