Mboma: Perfecting my craft

Gaborone - Namibia’s Tokyo Olympics’ silver medallist Christine Mboma on Saturday set tongues wagging with remarkable wins in the 100m final in a time of 10.97 seconds and the 200m in 21.87 seconds during the Gaborone International Meet.

She made history by becoming the first U/20 athlete in the sport’s history to go sub-11 seconds and sub-22 seconds in both the 100m and 200m finals on the same day on Saturday, but the 18-year-old Namibian sprint sensation is not getting carried away with her latest feat as she maintains that her best is yet to come.

“It was a great race today (Saturday). I competed against some of the best athletes who showed potential, and I must say they brought the heat to the tracks as they really pushed me to do my best. I am not entirely surprised by my performance and the times I clocked here, because I have been putting in a lot of work behind the scenes. These are just the results of that hard work you are seeing,” said Mboma, who is also the reigning 200m Diamond League champion.

“I will continue to put in more hard work so that I perfect my craft. I believe that my best is yet to come. I can still improve on those times and that remains my goal, going forward, in both the 100m and 200m events.” Her teammate and fellow Tokyo Olympics’ star Beatrice Masilingi again missed out on the opportunity to strut her stuff in both races in Gaborone after she suffered a hamstring injury.

According to their coach, Henk Botha, there is still no clear timeframe to when Masilingi will be back in action as they still have to assess the seriousness of her injury. Botha also shared that Masilingi might have to be send to South Africa for further medical attention on her injury.

“We tried with local doctors here in Botswana, but they couldn’t determine how long she will take to recover. So, I have decided to send her to South Africa for further assessment so that we can establish how bad the injury is. But so far, we will have all answers on her injury only by next week or so,” explained Botha.

Other winners for Team Namibia at the Gaborone International Meet were Daniel Paulus, who won gold in the men’s 5 000m race, and Carien Oosthuizen, who bagged a bronze in the women’s 400m event.

Sprinter Mahmad Böck took second place in the men’s 400m after clocking a time of 45.80 to set a new national record, while Vass Nandi collected a bronze medal in the women’s 400m B race.
