MINISTRY OF LABOUR, INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS AND DEVELOPMENT CREATION
Query: Please Minister of Labour, when will you have answers to our problem? We want Shoprite to recognise our union? Response: The application by Namibia Commercial Catering Food and Allied Workers Union (NACFU) was dismissed. The reason being that the trade union failed to show up at the arbitration proceeding, which is one of the requirements of recognition. The law makes provision for any applicant to appeal within 30 days from the date of the ruling, which in this case, has lapsed already. Query: Minister of Labour, our people are still being transported like cattle in lorries. When will you bring in a law, which will prevent this practice before the next accident happens? Response: The ministry is aware of this issue and it is receiving our outmost attention. We would like to assure the nation that plans are underway to engage other stakeholders to collectively put measures in place that will see employees transported in a safe manner. We acknowledge and appreciate the transport provision of the employees as part of their benefits. However, we are at the same time encouraging employers to safeguard the health and safety of their employees. Maria N. Hedimbi, Chief Public Relations Officer, Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment Creation, Email Address: mhedimbi@mol.gov.na
