Mixed results for Namibian rugby teams
Windhoek The Namibian second strings Rugby Fifteen, the Windhoek Draught Welwitschias were for the umpteenth time at the receiving end of a humiliating defeat, courtesy of another embarrassing 76-18 cricket score at Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek on Saturday at the hands of the visiting Border Bulldogs. The clearly out-of-sorts visitors were left with more questions than answers, as the Namibian amateurs failed to get out of first gear in a match that saw them conceding 12 tries within 80+ minutes of action. The visitors’ outside centre, Makazole Mapimpi, enjoyed a great day at the office – visiting the opponent’s whitewash on no fewer than four occasions, with substitute wing Sonwabiso Mqalo and fellow replacement Athenkosi Khetanu scoring a brace apiece. The educated boot of fullback Logan Basson contributed 19 points that included a try and seven goaled conversions. The match started at a frantic pace, with hosts Namibia opening their account on the scoreboard via a well-taken penalty by fullback Riaan van Zyl. However, the visitors soon took control with a converted try by Mapimbi. Just before the halftime break, the hosts crawled back into contention, as flyhalf Mancho Prinsloo dived over the touchline with van Wyk obliging the resultant conversion. But the hosts were dealt a major blow when winger Russell van Wyk was shown a yellow card by match referee Egon Seconds. With the hosts a man down, the visitors seized their numerical advantage and managed to run in three tries, with Mqalo and Khetani registering their second tries of the match, while Michael Makasse scored his team’s 10th try. Welwitschias’ enterprising winger and find of the season Phillip Nakashiku registered his name on the score sheet for an unconverted try. Nevertheless, Border ended the one-sided encounter in fine style when substitute fly half Nkululeko Ndlovu dived over the line and Mapimpi scored his fourth try to complete the riot. On a rather positive note, the Namibian senior Rugby Fifteen defeated Uganda 40-31 in the tightly contested African CAR Championships in Kampala on Saturday. In other action, Tunisia beat Ivory Coast 50-5 and Botswana suffered a 20-13 defeat at the hands of Ivory Coast in a mid-week clash, following another 43-10 defeat against Tunisia three days earlier.
