MTC Opens Heart to Flood Victims
"By Lynette Kozosi WINDHOEK MTC donated 3 000 mosquito nets and N$150 000 cash to flood victims in the north. The nets were bought from Mossi Nets for N$100 000. The donation was received by the Deputy Prime Minister, Dr Libertina Amathila, on Tuesday. Amathila promised that the money would be used for those that are in dire need. ""We all know that people have lost homes, children are struggling to attend school and whole villages are immersed in water. The next calamity that we are now preparing to fight against is the potential outbreak of waterborne diseases,"" she said. Amathila said the Emergency Management Unit in her office would ensure that those affected by the floods would receive the assistance. She pleaded with corporate and private citizens alike to follow the example set by MTC. According to the General Manager of Corporate Affairs at MTC, Albertus Aochamub, the funds would be raised from chargeable text message revenue yesterday, Thursday, February 7 and they expect to raise at least N$250 000. ""We aim to use the extensive mobile network deployed across the vast expanse of this land not only to derive profits but to improve the lives of all our people by investing in initiatives that will deal with the everyday problems we face,"" Aochamub said. Approximately 3000 people have been affected by the floods in the Ohangwena, Oshana, and Omusati regions. "
