2015-09-25Staff Report 2 Ovinjange The Governor of the Kunene Region, Angelika Muharukua, says she will use the natural qualities of the scenic Kaokoland and the wider Kunene Region to attract investment to the north-west region. Muharukua said Opuwo and its surroundings are often used by foreign filmmakers to shoot films about the fascinating lifestyles of the indigenous people in that part of the country, against the backdrop of breathtaking scenery. “Kaokoland is a tourism destination, but we do not benefit from donor funding. There are many films shot about the Ovahimba people, so I will mobilise those people (filmmakers) for funds that will be used to develop the region,” Muharukua said in an interview with New Era. “President Hage Geingob said we should not wait for government funds, but we should also try and ask donors and I will do that. Next year September there will be a change. I’m going to do it,” she reiterated. She revealed that the Office of the Governor recently received a donation of N$500 000 from a local company, which would be used to buy water tanks for a gardening project that is expected to commence soon. Muharukua also understook to work closely with opposition political parties in order to eradicate poverty in the vast region. “I’ve decided to work with all political parties and the neighbouring regions to look at ways to fight poverty in this region,” she said. 2015-09-25Staff Report 2
