Muharukua threatens to dismiss AR sympathisers
2016-07-08Staff Report 2 Opuwo Kunene Regional Governor Angelika Muharukua has threatened to terminate the contracts of certain civil servants and local authority councillors, accusing them of hindering development and participating in AR activities in the region. She blasted local authority councillors for being at the forefront of advocating for fair and equal land distribution, yet they are ironically dishing out land among themselves and their cronies. “Civil servants, we know you. You are bringing the AR here to Kunene. Who are you? We know you and we are going to chase you away,” she thundered. Muharukua made the remarks in Opuwo on Wednesday. She also accused some civil servants and regional councillors of being in bed with opposition members and of sabotaging government efforts towards development of the region. She said such tendencies are causing decay in the regional management and are denying the electorate much-needed services. “There are elected members of this August house sleeping with the opposition and calling for regime change, most specifically at Opuwo Town Council, in the name of Affirmative Repositioning (AR) Opuwo concerned group. “In the same vein, there are public servants engineering strategies to sabotage the government of the day and equitable service delivery in this region,” Muharukua charged. The governor was agitated by the recent demonstration by Opuwo residents calling for quality service delivery, claiming the protest was instigated by AR. The demonstrators accused the council of unfair distribution of land, poor service delivery and favouritism, among other complaints. In her State of the Region Address Muharukua said suspected AR members are destroying the system and called for radical change to deliver services and development to the region’s inhabitants. Muharukua also appealed to regional leaders to end the trend of unfair promotions, calling for procedural appointments. “This thing of ‘appoint me tomorrow’ should stop,” said Muharukua. In response Kazeongere Zeriapi Tjeundo, the DTA Regional Councillor of Opuwo Rural Constituency, said maybe the opposition has better proposals, which is why ruling party members are attracted. Tjeundo also appealed to the governor to deal with disciplinary issues with the concerned people elsewhere. “This is a developmental occasion, where we are supposed to discuss and address issues concerning our lives,” Tjeundo said. 2016-07-08Staff Report 2
