WINDHOEK – The president of the Namibia Football Ascociation (NFA) John Muinjo wants Namibia Premier League (NPL) chairman Johnny JJD Doeseb to reconsider his earlier stance to step down and to make himself available for re-election for the NPL top position.
The NPL chairman said he will not seek reappointment after the end of his current four-year term, which is due to expire in July this year. Muinjo says he strongly believes Doeseb is the right person to lead the country’s flagship league into the future. “He (Doeseb) was part of the NFA constitutional review process in January this year under the guidance of Fifa and his expertise will come in handy during the implementation of resolutions taken at that gathering,” says Muinjo. Doeseb, who has been at the helm of the NPL since 2008, in March earlier this year revealed plans to step down. The flamboyant mining mogul cited lack of professionalism at club level, constant failure to adhere to basics and lack of commitment from the league’s affiliates when it comes to building a strong football brand, as well as the absence of developmental structures at club level.
Muinjo is however not entirely convinced with the reasons proferred by Doeseb and reckons his administrative acumen and visionary leadership is a rare commodity in domestic football. “Under his leadership, the league is currently going through a transformation process and it is my strong conviction that this process should continue and needs to be driven towards its conclusion under his wing.” The Namibian football supremo added that succession in football just as in many other institutions is a process, which requires proper planning, consultation and dedication and therefore believes Doeseb’s decision not to stand for re-election would be a great disservice to the country’s topflight league.
However, Muinjo was quick to the dispel perception out there that his desire and admiration for Doeseb’s qualities should be interpreted that there are no other able candidates to run the affairs of the NPL. “My request is based purely on the basis of continuity and programme implementation,” Muinjo reiterated.
