N$20m academy for Etunda
By Obrein Simasiku WINDHOEK - The Dirk Mudge Trust (DMT) has unveiled plans to build Nakayale Private Academy School at Etunda in the northern region of Omusati for N$20 million. The school is scheduled for completion by the end of this year and will have its first intake in January 2016. Announcing the school project on Tuesday, the first trustee of DMT, Chrisna Greeff, said, “The first intake of learners at Nakayale will be for Grades 0 to 2, with fresh intakes of Grade 0 and 1 every year as grades progress up to Grade 7. It is the vision of the Dirk Mudge Trust to then start on the second phase, the construction of a secondary school, up to Grade 12, on the same premises.” The school will be constructed on a 50-hectare piece of land, which DMH received from ELCIN’s Western Diocese. Once complete, the school will comprise eight classrooms, eight dormitories, a school hall, teachers’ accommodation, sports fields, administration offices, and kitchen and laundry facilities. All selected learners will be boarders at the school for maximum attention, development and health care services, Greef further explained. This is not an unusual move for DMT, as in 2013, the trust constructed additional classrooms and dormitories at Uahekua Herunga Primary School at Otjorute for N$1 million. “This was made possible since DMT sold its shares in Democratic Media Holdings (DMH) in 2012, after which it had to set objectives to commit the full proceeds of the sale of share in DMH towards education for deserving underprivileged children and the development of surrounding communities,” said Greef. She reiterated that it was for that reason a need was identified to provide a private educational facility for deserving children in similar safe rural settings, adding that rural areas are mostly inaccessible due to lack of road infrastructure and the long distance from nearby areas. However, she emphasized that the school is entirely inclined to the affected inhabitants of the Omusati Region, specifically pointing the communities in the western part of the region to be the utmost disadvantaged. “Learners selected for enrolment at Nakayale Private Academy will receive full scholarships, provision of school fees, accommodation, clothing, food and learning materials and will be selected on the basis of the smart kids and mostly vulnerable,” stated Greef. When asked how the trust will manage the school, she said the chairperson of the Board of Governors of St Paul’s College, Chief Justice Peter Shivute, agreed to partner with Nakayale Private Academy by providing a wide range of requirements, like curriculum, selection and training of teachers and procurement of learning materials. Furthermore, she said the land is suitable for food production to sustain the provision of healthy, nutritious food to the school thus also creating ample job opportunities to the parents and students’ caregivers.
