N$35 million allocated for air-travel for VIPs
2016-04-05Staff Report 2 Windhoek The Ministry of Works and Transport has motivated its budget allocation of N$4,1 billion, of which N$ 35,3 million is to ensure the safe, secure and efficient flying of President Hage Geingob, Vice-president Nickey Iyambo, Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila and her deputy, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, as well cabinet ministers and their deputies. The services extend to other high-ranking government officials, foreign dignitaries to local and international destinations. This is according to Works and Transport Minister Alpheus !Naruseb when he motivated the budget N$4,1 billion budget for the Department of Transport, through which the budgetary allocation for the air travel of the president, vice president, prime minister and deputy prime minister is allocated. Additionally, government air services provide charter services to the general public and special operations, including relief and rescue work when required throughout the country. It is under the same services, that the new VIP terminal at Eros Airport is being constructed. !Naruseb also requested N$10,4 million for aircraft accident investigations, in line with international aviation safety conventions to which the country is a signatory. The ministry will, among others, improve aviation safety by determining the causes of air accidents and serious incidents and making safety recommendations intended to prevent recurrence. Explaining the works of the Civil Aviation Air Navigations and Infrastructure Administration Programme, !Naruseb said it aims to ensure the construction and rehabilitation of civil aviation infrastructure. In addition this programme is responsible for ensuring local and international aviation laws are administered in compliance to international statutes. Other institutions under this programme include the Namibia Airports Company and Air Namibia. The minister noted that an amount of N$70 million will be allocated to the formulation of transport policy and regulatory oversight to ensure safe, efficient and effective mobility, as well as universal access, to Namibian citisens. Nearly N$978,2 million will be allocated to the upgrading and rehabilitation of the core national railway line network infrastructure in the country. In addition, this amount will support TransNamib with building up adequate capacity of locomotives and other much-needed equipment. 2016-04-05Staff Report 2
