Nafawu to deal with defiant service station owners
2015-06-29Staff Report 2 Windhoek The secretary general of Namibia Fuel and Allied Workers’ Union (Nafawu) Felix Machenje vowed to deal with service station owners, who do not adhere to set minimum wages. Machenje, who is two weeks old in office, said the minimum wage is his first priority as service station workers have suffered for too long without receiving decent salaries. The agreed minimum wage, which some service station owners ignore is N$7.20 per hour translating to a monthly basic salary of N$1 400, while overtime is N$10.80 per hour and double on public holidays and on Sundays “We know the ones who hide under the skin colour as service station owners who do not want to comply with the minimum wage, we will expose you and make sure you comply as no favours will be tolerated because service station workers have suffered for too long,” stressed Machenje. Furthermore, he called on government and the service station association to engage with the union so that they can come up with an amicable solution to end the suffering of workers. “The government should release the brake on gazzeting the Minimum Wage Bill, as it is long overdue. Once enforceable, we will deal with those that do not want to comply accordingly,” said the Nafawu secretary general. On the other hand, Machenje cautioned workers to learn to respect their jobs and their employers and focus more on engaging the union on issues that concern them. “We are ready to work tirelessly to make sure the rights and lives of the workers in the fuel industry are protected and safe,” further remarked Machenje. Last week, Machenje blasted those that are saying they are not going to corporate with him to watch the space as he is now the lawfully man in charge. “Those that are trying to sabotage me I will open a lawsuit against them, as I am the lawful leader and I have the right to do so,” asserted the new secretary general. 2015-06-29Staff Report 2
