Namibia narrowly stumble against Canada... face Tonga tomorrow
2015-05-15Staff Report 2 Windhoek Despite a narrow 35-20 defeat, the Namibia Under-20 rugby team on Tuesday gave favourites Canada a good run for their money in their opening clash of the World Rugby U/20 Trophy tournament at the University Stadium in Lisbon, Portugal. A very tight first half finished with Canada leading 13-10, a result that rewarded Namibia’s consistent exhibition and, according to Canadian head coach Jeff Williams, “punished the many errors” his side committed during the first 40 minutes. In the second half, the North Americans played with a lot more control and created two more tries that, along with fly-half Dylan Morgan’s 16 points, proved enough to defeat the gutsy Namibians 35 to 20. In a post-match interview, Namibian skipper Christo van der Merwe, who scored two of Namibia’s three tries, recognised that their squad “failed to gain momentum and will have to be faster when defending against Tonga”, their next opponents. Namibia will tomorrow take to the field for their second clash of the youth tournament against Tonga, in what is expected to be a crucial match where a likely victory for Namibia would go a long way in redefining their future prospects. 2015-05-15Staff Report 2
