Namibian youngsters celebrate Youth Day
WINDHOEK-up to 300 out of the 500 expected youths joined this year’s National Youth Day celebrations at the Katutura Youth Complex Sport Field on Monday. This year 8th national youth day celebrations is part of the youth week which is celebrated mostly by Namibian young people by every last week of April, and ends with the Youth Day on April 27. Youth day is mainly organised for the youths to get together and share different experiences and aspirations. The day also serves as a platform to rededicate the efforts of the nation in support of the youth as well as to mobilise civil society, public and the private sectors in support of the development of the youth. The day also encourages a climate of youth friendliness permeates the entire country. Youths from 19 to 35 years old gathered at the sport field where they were enlightened by different youth’s organisations seven of them of which are under the National Youth Council (NYC) of Namibia. They explained the importance of youth organisations to the youths when it comes to crises in the country and issues effecting the youths.  Despite the lower turn-up of the youths at this year’s celebrations, some youth’s believe fellow youths are moving away from their traditions and cultures while some others are forgetting where they come from and the importance of the youth day. One of the youths, Martha Ithana (22), says she was not very happy to see the old people celebrating the NYD instead of young people. “This day is meant for only young people and I see old people are the ones coming in large numbers. I thing young people need to be addressed on the importance of this day’s celebration,” she says.   Matheus Haikali (19) says only if young people start to act together and start to take control of everything regarding Youth Day celebrations. “We have no one to blame rather than our self, we need to stand up on our own and act together to make this possible,” says Haikali.
