NFA reappoints Mannetti on four-year contract … strict terms and conditions
Windhoek Namibian football yesterday received a timely boost ahead of the much-anticipated 2017 AFCON Qualifier against continental giants, Senegal in September. The Namibian Football Association (NFA) announced yesterday that it has finally reached an agreement with embattled coach, Ricardo Mannetti, following a drawn-out dispute regarding the renewal of his employment contract, which led to his shock resignation. To remedy the situation, the NFA moved swiftly to offer Mannetti a much-improved four-year contract, which commenced on August 1 2015 and runs until July 31 2019. NFA President Frans Mbidi made the announcement during a brief conference at Football House in Windhoek. However, despite a string of persistent requests from the media that Mbidi reveal the exact figures in Mannetti’s monthly package, Mbidi refused point-blank to disclose the salary figures, but gave assurances that it is a market-related package. New Terms and Conditions All indications are that it won’t just be another day at the office for the former Brave Warriors midfield mastermind, as the NFA went to great lengths to clearly outline their expectations and long-term ambitions for the team and coach. Included among the new requirements is that Mannetti should in all likelihood ensure that Namibia qualify for the 2019 African Nations Cup (AFCON). He was also mandated to continuously make sure that the Brave Warriors adequately improve on the FIFA rankings, globally and continentally. Mbidi further made it clear that should Mannetti fail to deliver on these criteria, the association would be left with little choice but to look at other alternatives, such as appointing another coach, or perhaps assist Mannetti in some other way to strengthen the team’s performance. About a month ago, Mannetti left all and sundry with dropped jaws when he hastily tendered his resignation as national team head coach, shortly after steering the Brave Warriors to their first ever Cosafa Cup triumph in May. After resigning, the coach apparently asked to be deployed to his old position of NFA In-House coach, which he maintained until the new offer was agreed to yesterday.
