NFA sets CHAN Cup preps in motion
WINDHOEK - The Namibia Football Association (NFA) is taking bold steps in making sure the country is ready and well prepared for next year’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament, slatted for Rwanda from January 16 to February 7. In preparation for the CHAN Cup, the NFA will from today until Wednesday hold a mini tournament in Tsumeb to select a team that will represent Namibia next year. Invitational teams from the MTC Premiership, Southern Stream First Division, North West First Division and North East First Division will contest in the mini tournament. All four invitational teams have already selected their players and coaching staff. African Stars mentor Woody Jacobs will coach the MTC Premiership team while former Erongo coach Rodney Wallace Doeseb will be in charge of the Southern Stream First Division. Meanwhile, Rundu Chiefs coach, John Sikerete will oversee the North East First Division and Hennie Kavendjii and Agnus Elemu are co-coaches for the North West First Division. The CHAN Cup exclusively features players who are active in their respective national leagues and also qualified to play in the ongoing season. Expatriate players, regardless of where they play, even in Africa, may not qualify to take part in the tournament. The tournament is held every two years, alternating with the Africa Cup of Nations. The qualifying phase has taken place every even year and the final every odd year. In recent times, the tournament has swapped years with the Africa Cup of Nations.
