NHE to pay N$2.1 million for 150 plots in Okahao
WINDHOEK - The National Housing Enterprise (NHE) is in the process of purchasing 150 residential plots in Okahao for N$2.1 million to build houses under the national mass housing development programme. This was made known by the Okahao Town Council in a public advert last week giving the public until December 23 to make any objections to the sale of the plots. The plots are located in Okahao’s extensions three and four. The most expensive plot measures 741 square metres and is being sold for N$26 935 while the smallest is going for N$11 675 measuring 305 square metres. Okahao Town Council Chief Executive Officer Gisbertus Mukulu told New Era that there is a high demand for land at the town but the council’s hands are tied by the lack of land. “The demand is high but we do not have land. We have a high number of applications but we do not have the land to cater for the demand,” Mukulu said. Government last year launched the mass housing programme in which it plans to build 185 000 houses by 2030. NHE has over the past months complained about the lack of serviced land across the country on which houses under the mass housing programme can be built. He said so far 50 houses have been completed under the scheme. “We are not embarking upon another phase to build 150 houses. The erven are being sold at a subsidised rate. If you look closely, under normal circumstances an erf measuring 400 to 500 square metres will sell for almost N$90 000 but in this case we are selling it for less than N$13 000,” Mukulu said.
