NHE strives for affordable housing in Otjiwarongo

Through a collaborative effort between the Otjiwarongo Town Council and the National Housing Enterprise, some 40 plots were acquired from the Otjiwarongo Town Council in 2021 and development initiated. NHE’s management team, led by chief executive officer Gisbertus Mukulu, last week visited the project site in Otjiwarongo.

The project, envisioned for completion by the end of June 2022, is progressing on schedule, and is well up to 70% completed. More than 50% of the houses constructed under this project are geared to assist the lower-income-earners of the Otjiwarongo Town Council’s staff members.

Speaking at the recent project site visit, Otjiwarongo mayor Gotlieb Candy Shivute said, ‘’We applaud the progress made thus far, and commend the NHE for the swift action to make housing a reality for the inhabitants of Otjiwarongo.’’

Mukulu then used the opportunity to call upon all other town councillors to avail land to the NHE. “This is a boost for the NHE to do more within our communities,” he added.

According to NHE spokesperson Tuafi Shafombabi, the enterprise believes in giving back, and has thus increased women’s empowerment in all projects. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Shafombabi noted that there are 16 women currently involved in the project in the fields of administration (2), building artisans (3), office administration (1), and 10 general workers.

Meanwhile, the NHE management also conducted a consultative meeting on Monday, 11 April, with Okahandja Town Council members to engage on the best possible ways to make housing a reality for that town’s residents.

“Further visits to the Outapi, Tsandi and Okahao Town Councils are in the pipeline as part of our strategic stakeholders’ engagement plan, in line with the mandate to provide affordable and quality housing,” Shafombabi stated.
