Nujoma, Pohamba to attend Castro memorial
Windhoek Founding president of Namibia Dr Sam Nujoma accompanied by former president Hifikepunye Pohamba and Swapo Party secretary general Nangolo Mbumba left yesterday for Havana, Cuba to attend a memorial for late Cuban leader Fidel Castro. Nujoma and his delegation will join President Hage Geingob in Havana to attend the memorial service in honour of Fidel Castro scheduled for today. Special assistant to Nujoma John Nauta yetserday said Nujoma, Pohamba, and Mbumba, accompanied by Swapo party secretary for information and mobilisation Helmut Angula had left on Monday for Cuba to join president Geingob at the memorial of the late Cuban revolutionary leader, who died on Friday, aged 90. Nujoma, Pohamba, Mbumba and Angula all attended military training in Cuba as part of support rendered to the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (Plan) by that country. Cuba has declared nine days of mourning for its late leader, while its flags will fly at half-mast. Meanwhile, Vice President Dr Nickey Iyambo, Nujoma, Pohamba and the Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila were among those who signed the book of condolences at the Cuban Embassy in Windhoek. Nujoma signed on Sunday. Iyambo, Pohamba and Kuugongelwa-Amadhila signed the book of condolences yesterday.
