O&L, Santam voted employers of choice
"WINDHOEK - Ohlthaver & List (O&L) and Santam scooped the Best Company to Work For awards in an annual survey conducted by auditing firm, Deloitte. The awards ceremony, which took place yesterday, were held under the theme “Lead and Develop”. The awards have been held for four consecutive years in Namibia. O&L came first in the large-sized company category with second place going to Old Mutual (last year’s runner up), and third place to Trustco (first time participant). The large-sized company category covers those businesses that have 500 employees or more. In the medium-sized company category first place went to Santam, second place went to Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund and the third place went to Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC). The medium-sized category is defined as a company that has 50 to 500 employees. Elaborating on the theme of “Lead and Develop”, Deloitte Namibia’s Partner, Ramsay McDonald said that living in a developing world requires new and innovative approaches to leading business, quite different to those required in a first world market. “It is clear then that leading and developing people will need to be dealt with in new and energetic ways. These new approaches will ensure competitiveness in this constantly changing world of business,” said McDonald yesterday. Deloitte sees the awards as “an invaluable management tool which can be applied to shape the successful future of any business”. Participating companies were also awarded the Deloitte Standard of Excellence Seal for achieving an average score of greater than or equal to the Deloitte benchmark for the standard of excellence. This benchmark score is an average overall score across the 10 dimensions surveyed of more than 3.7. Achieving this score means these company employees are mostly positive across all 10 identified dimensions and the 44 questions surveyed. The Standard of Excellence Achievers were Agra, MTC, MVA Fund, O&L, Old Mutual, Santam, Trustco. According to Deloitte, this year 15 companies participated in the survey, which is an increase from 11 companies last year. Deloitte interviewed about 12 550 employees compared to last year when they interviewed more than 7 000 employees. For the third year in a row the top three survey indicators identified by employees included sense of confidence, job satisfaction and operational effectiveness. McDonald also remarked that the best companies to work for fully understand and appreciate that in today’s business world employees need to think, respond and lead differently as the game of business is changing at a rapid peace. Deloitte South Africa will host another award ceremony on October 16, to honour top companies in the region. The countries that took part in the regional survey are Kenya, South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. ""On November 25, we will have a conference in Namibia with all the participating companies at which the overall results of the Namibian 2014 survey will be announced,” noted Mignon du Preez, spokesperson of Deloitte."
