2016-11-22Staff Report 2 Windhoek The police in Omaheke Region are gearing up to ensure this Christmas festive season is celebrated peacefully without violence. Regional Police Commander for Omaheke Region Commissioner Josephat Apel said police in the region would be ready to deal with any criminal activities that arise during the festive period. Speaking to New Era yesterday, Apel appealed to the public to do their part in maintaining law and order during the festive season. He said the police would work round the clock to create a safe and peaceful festive season for visitors and also for the region’s inhabitants. Roadblocks will be set up in and around the region on dates yet to be confirmed before the start of the festive season so as to target drinking and driving culprits and those who overload, among others. The regional commander further discouraged motorists from consuming alcohol and driving, saying there will be random roadblocks and spot checks with breathalyser tests conducted on various roads. He says the overall aim is to make public roads safer, not only for motorists, but for pedestrians as well, which is expected to in turn help reduce the number of road accidents related to drunk driving. Apel called on residents to secure their property against possible theft, to be on the lookout for suspicious individuals in their neighbourhoods and to inform the police accordingly. He further advised bar owners in the Gobabis area to abide by the rules and regulations of the municipality. “Currently we’re receiving a high number [of reports] of wrongdoing at bars in around Gobabis and therefore I appeal to all bar owners to adhere to the rules and regulations,” he said.
