Ombalantu authority helps drought-stricken households
Outapi In a move aimed at meeting the government halfway in poverty alleviation and drought relief, the Ombalantu Traditional Authority last week donated 585 bags of maize meal to the most affected communities to the tune of N$55 230. The donation, which was financed from the traditional authority’s own coffers, benefited three households in every 157 villages that fall under the Ombalantu Traditional Authority’s jurisdiction. Households received one 20kg bag of maize meal. The beneficiaries were identified by their respective village headman. In addition, the Ombalantu Traditional Authority also donated 114 bags of 5kg each of maize meal to every expectant mother residing at the Tukwathela women shelter near the Outapi district hospital. Handing over the donation, the chief of the Ombalantu Traditional Authority, Oswin Mukulu, said the donation was made possible by the N$10 annual contribution committed by all households falling under the Ombalantu Traditional Authority. In this regard he urged community members to always pay their royalties so that the traditional authority is better financially capacitated to carry out its tasks, including assisting community members in case of emergencies such as flood and fire. “We decided to meet the government and regional councilors halfway in this issue of addressing hunger due to drought, as most of the households under my jurisdiction were severely affected by drought and have nothing to feed their children,” Mukulu said. Maria Alfeus, an expectant mother from Oshitunda in Ombadja village in Angola, thanked the traditional authority for coming to their rescue, noting that the donation will go a long way to feed them during their stay at the shelter while awaiting delivery. • Lot Shikongo is an information officer working for the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology in Omusati Region.
