Opinion - Time: A scarce resource

How do you spend your time?

Time is a resource we all have to our advantage to utilise, however we see fit. How we spend our time is of value due to the fact that once lost, it can never be claimed back.

In mindfulness as part of soul work in meditation, one practices it by being completely present, while taking into account all your senses and what they are communicating to you.

I like to compare this soulful practice with time.

Never changing and ever-present! One of the most expensive yet freely available resources we can have as beings.

Since birth, life is about time, and all of life’s seasons are based on time. One would ask, with the just-concluded long holiday, how did you spend it and with whom, and was it all worthwhile?

Do we ever really pay attention to time, as do you ever reflect on it from a personal, relational and occupational level?

Is your time worth it, and does it bring a certain level of satisfaction and reward to your life? Do you treat your time as a scarce commodity?

Your personal time can be described as the time that you allocate to yourself in order to serve your needs.

This can be time dedicated to your health, wellness or personal growth. For example, do we allocate time in the day where you spend it only with your thoughts, either through meditation or strengthening your purpose?

Personal time also entails doing activities that add value to your life.

Do you engage in personal time, either gardening, painting, taking walks in nature, lying in a warm healing bath, or simply enjoying telly, exploring the internet, reading a good book?

Personal time is about putting your own personal needs first, thus allowing yourself to confidently say that it was worth it.

All of us have relations that are important and essential to our lives; be it with family or loved ones, either physically or through social media.

Spending time with those you regard as significant relations in your life has to be a deliberate act of kindness.

This time has to be of quality as you engage in activities that contribute towards the growth of that relationship. How much time is missed while on social media that could very well be dedicated to the people you are with?

We all want the best relations that are based on mutual trust, respect, care and support, and how we communicate the value of that relationship is often linked to the time you invest in it.

During the early 1900s, the concept of time management was the buzzword in many organisations/factories and often linked to punctuality, planning and organising various activities based on their priority and deadlines.

At organisational level, work is prioritised using various methods, some due to the essential nature of the service being provided, and at times due to the risks involved if a product is not sold on time.

The benefits to organisations and employees to manage their time and meeting deadlines is crucial as it contributes towards realising the company’s mandate.

And if at all not well-managed, loss can occur and often profit is not accomplished. We dedicate the majority of our time to the world of work, and completing various tasks timeously is linked to the achievement of targets.

There is a saying, “what you invest your time most doing, is the key determiner for the legacy you leave behind”.

When linking time to our past, present and future events, it is clearly stated by Marcus Aurelius, who continue sto inspire us today with his timeless wisdom about life by echoing “time is like a river, you cannot touch the same water twice, because the flow that had passed will never pass again”. Use your time wisely and conscientiously.
