Veterans’ security company opens multi-million dollar building
2015-03-16Staff Report 2 ONDANGWA - The Deputy Minister of Veterans Affairs Hilma Nicanor has encouraged the management of Star Protection Services to utilize their income resourcefully and not expect government bailouts. Nicanor said her ministry would not bail out the business if it manages its assets poorly. Star Protection Services is a former subsidiary of Development Brigade Corporation (DBC), which was taken over by the ministry as per cabinet resolution to refurbish and diversify income-generating projects aimed at improving the livelihood of war veterans who could no longer secure jobs in the Namibian police and defence forces. Other DBC projects are Okatope poultry farm and Namibia Bricks Enterprises, both operating in the Oshikoto Region, and Etaka recreational facility in Omusati Region, work on which the ministry is in the process of finalising. Nicanor inaugurated the N$19.8 million building housing the security enterprise in Ondangwa last week on Friday. Nicanor encouraged Star Protection Services to generate enough income to sustain its operational activities and to contribute to the country’s economic development. “The ministry can only finance those projects that are in line with the government’s objectives, which are aimed at job creation, income generation and economic empowerment to redress the past injustices of our people,” stated Nicanor. The ministry further committed itself to expand its support system to ensure that all other projects are fully implemented and operational. Also speaking at the inauguration of the new building the general manager of the security entity, Veikko Peelenga, said Star Protection Services offers property protection, armed guards, protects cash in transit and avails rapid armed response and VIP services. Peelenga said the company would ensure it sustains itself and serves its customers accordingly. Peelenga is optimistic the number of workers will triple in the next five years. Since its inception in 1989 by Kalahari Holdings in partnership with the government, Star Protection Services has employed about 344 people countrywide, 72 of whom were women. The building was constructed by Amupolo Construction and has offices, accommodation, a conference hall and a secure cash-in-transit room for bulk money storage. The deputy minister appealed to Star Protection Services employees to work hard and continue to deliver quality services to meet the expectations of clients including the government, private sector as well as the general community.
