Otjombinde road upgrades to start soon

Road users of Talismanus in the Otjombinde constituency will soon enjoy a low-volume seal road when the gravel road gets upgraded early next year.

Roads Authority (RA) CEO Conrad Lutombi announced this last week while on a mission to assess the branch leading to Donkerbos, a settlement where about 400 people of the San community reside.

He said the road to Donkerbos will also be upgraded to a gravel road.

Residents of Donkerbos welcomed the development, saying it will shorten the distance to their village and help them connect with the rest of the constituency.

Donkerbos, which has just one institution, a primary school, has for years been difficult to reach because of the bad road.

Acting education inspector in the region Tuiuane Tjozongoro indicated while welcoming the development that road infrastructure equally contributes positively to the education sector.

He said the road’s condition had in the past hampered access to the school, and eventually led to a low turnout of subject advisors or those providing counselling and other services at the school.

“Currently, we have over 100 learners, but our target is to have about 400 to 500 learners at this school because our aim is to have a combined school here”, added Tjozongoro.

While admitting that the school faces challenges such as water accessibility, ablution facilities and proper operational space for staff, the official said he hopes that with this road upgrade, the school will have an increased learner intake, which will eventually make a combined school a realisation.

Responding to the needs of the school, Lutombi promised that as part of their corporate social responsibility, the RA will mobilise resources and start attending to the needs as soon as November this year.

The groundwork of clearing the road, which is anticipated to be completed by November this year has started, while actual construction will commence early next year.

Good roads play major roles in the lives of people as they provide safety to human life and accelerate economic development as well as access between places.
