PDM promises people-centered campaign

A fierce battle is brewing between political parties, with some having launched their 2024 election campaigns, while others expose purported unfair labour practices countrywide in an attempt to win the hearts of the electorate.

The year 2024 sets the tone for the upcoming political contest among the various political parties in Namibia for the Presidential and National Assembly elections as well as the 2025 Regional Councils and Local Authority elections.

The Popular Democratic Movement (PDM), which launched its election campaign yesterday, vowed that any political party that is serious about taking over the instruments of power from the ruling party after the 2024 Presidential and National Assembly elections must have a people-centred campaign.

PDM secretary general Manuel Ngaringombe was quick to point out “that is exactly what their #GiveUsAChance-WorkWithUs campaign is premised on”.

He said the 2024 Presidential and National Assembly elections will be a defining moment for Namibia, and nothing can be left to chance.

“The masses of our people have felt the brunt of the Swapo government’s pervasive corruption and skewed policies, which have directly contributed to the high unemployment, poverty and unsustainable levels of inequality. Therefore, we are urging all Namibians to #GiveUsAChance-WorkWithUs. Only the PDM has the internal capacity, the political dexterity and the maturity to take over the instruments of power from Swapo,” Ngaringombe said.

PDM’s campaign launch follows the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), who in March this year already launched the party’s campaign for the 2024 Presidential and National Assembly elections at the Goreangab soccer field in Windhoek, and also at an open space opposite the ABC Centre in Ondangwa.

IPC leader Panduleni Itula, who ran as an independent presidential candidate for the country’s presidency in the 2019 general election, finishing second to President Hage Geingob during the launch, said the time is over when a party only launches political campaigns on the eve of elections.

To date, there are 19 registered political parties and 21 registered associations with the ECN.

PDM is confident their hashtag campaign for the 2024 Presidential and National Assembly election will be a resounding success, and that the message of the PDM will be well received by the electorate throughout all 121 constituencies in Namibia.

The party is urging the rank and file of the PDM to ensure the manifesto of the PDM reaches every single Namibian during the duration of this campaign.

He said, true to the spirit of diversity and inclusivity, the campaign is also being launched under the hashtags #!esaMaDaRe-AdaSisen and #TupaOmpito-LongaNatse.

“This hashtag campaign is aimed at mobilising the electorate behind the PDM as the only alternative armed with the political dexterity and maturity to take over the instruments of power from the Swapo government in the 2024 Presidential and National Assembly election,” Ngaringombe charged.

The opposition party says the hashtag campaign will also serve as an opportunity for the PDM to enhance participatory democracy among Namibians, in general, and the electorate, in particular, by conducting a robust and thorough civic education campaign throughout all 121 constituencies in the country.
