2015-04-21Staff Report 2 WINDHOEK - The investigations in the matter in which the suspended acting secretary-general of the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW), Alfred Angula, faces a charge of fraud are incomplete. As a result, the Prosecutor General (PG)’s ruling on how to proceed with the matter was not available on Friday when Angula returned to the Katutura Magistrate’s Court. Prosecutor Arrie Husselman requested for the matter to be remanded to May 22, 2015, to enable the PG to make a ruling on a request that was granted by Magistrate Ivan Gawanab. Edwin Coetzee, the lawyer for Angula, informed the court that his client first appeared in court on October 17, 2013. “Almost three years and no decision yet on whether to charge my client,” he said. Angula was granted bail of N$50,000 in October 2013, which was also extended until his next appearance. He faces a charge of fraud and theft from the Namibia Farmworkers Union (NAFWU) involving about N$1.2 million, according to the charge sheet. The money was donated to the union by a foreign donor agency. Angula was arrested after the donor agency, Fes Belgium, laid charges of fraud and theft against him. The offence was allegedly committed between January 31 and December 31, 2012. Angula was arrested in December 2013, and was denied bail during his first appearance. Only after a formal bail hearing was he granted bail. Angula was the secretary-general of NAFWU until July 2011, when he took up the position of acting secretary-general of the NUNW, the umbrella union following the departure of Evilastus Kaaronda. 2015-04-21Staff Report 2
