Police recover stolen money from security guards

RUNDU – Yesterday the police in Rundu recovered N$1.05 million that was stolen from the security company transporting the money to ATM machines on Monday morning.

The money was recovered from the security guards who were transporting the money. However, about N$30 000 of the money is still missing. The money was discovered buried inside a corrugated zinc and mud house at Gove village, 30 km east of Rundu.

“This was not an armed robbery. It is a joke, [security guards] planned everything, that is why together with my team we started searching on the ground, questioning, and we surrounded all criminals that we know in the region but through intensive interrogation of the responsible security guards we discovered they were not robbed but planned the whole event,” said Commissioner Olavi Auanga, who is the regional commander for Kavango West and East.

Police say the two security guards in charge of transporting the money reported an armed robbery through their company’s radio that alerted the police. The police acted promptly to catch the supposed robbers, setting up roadblocks and doing intelligence gathering from the criminal world.

“It took us just 14 hours to establish the whereabouts of the money. We discovered the money at 2 o’clock this morning buried in a maize-meal bag but we are still looking for the N$30 000 still missing as we only found N$1.05 million in the bag,” said Auanga, adding he was disappointed to discover that one of the senior security guards of the company was involved.

Auanga said he would ask that all security company personnel in the two regions be profiled in future to create a safer environment.

“Wherever crime occurs in these regions, a security guard is involved. That is our concern and this should be a warning to security companies particularly in the two Kavango regions. From now on people should know that we are not going to tolerate any crime, we will bring you to book and we are not sleeping, we are busy,” he said.

The money, which was destined for a First National Bank ATM, was handed to the bank management at Rundu yesterday and the suspects are  expected to appear in court today.
