Politician Bemoans Absence of Tarred Roads
By Chrispin Inambao WINDHOEK Sibbinda councillor Felix Mukupi has appealed to the Ministry of Works, Transport and Communication to speed up the proposed construction of tarred roads in his area and in Linyanti Constituency to stimulate economic development. Mukupi said he personally broached the topic concerning the importance of having the road network tarred in both Sibbinda and Linyanti constituencies in terms of rural development when he had an audience with the former Minister of Works, Transport and Communication, Moses Amweelo, who made the assurance the roads would be tarred. But he says since Amweelo 's departure, it appears there has been a disruption with regard to tarring the roads in the two constituencies that could unlock the tourism potential there. The outspoken Swapo Party politician says that apart from contacting the ministry to consider tarring the main gravel roads crisscrossing the two constituencies, he had also appealed to Telecom Namibia to install public phones so that members of his constituency can also participate in national debates via radio phone-ins. Mukupi says if the gravel roads are tarred in his constituency and particularly in Linyanti those harboring secessionist ambitions would run out of excuses, as they will not be able to tell their followers that the area lags behind in terms of economic development. Contacted to comment on plans regarding the proposed tarring of Linyanti and Sibbinda, Julius Nghweda, the spokesman at the ministry said he would only speak on the issue after acquainting himself with the ministry's master plan on planned roads. He invited the Sibbinda regional councillor to contact him so that they could freely exchange views and revisit the issue. Telecom Namibia's senior public relations manager Oiva Angula was not immediately available to comment on appeals to install public phones in those rural areas. cubic
