President Pohamba Proposes Technical School for Karas
2008-03-04Staff Report 2 "By Petronella Sibeene WINDHOEK Daunted by the high rate of unemployment in the Karas Region, President Hifikepunye Pohamba over the weekend said the Ministry of Education is seriously contemplating the conversion of one of the three secondary schools in the region into a technical training institution. In a meeting with the Karas leadership and the Minister of Education Nangolo Mbumba among other members of parliament, Pohamba expressed concern at the high unemployment rate among the youths in the region. The unemployment rate in Karas stands at over 47 percent. It is the third highest in the country preceded by Omaheke (50.5%) and rivalling closely the Omusati Region (47.6%). Pohamba believes unemployment among the youth can only be resolved if leaders embarked on skills training. ""I seriously consulted with the Minister of Education. We calculated and found that two secondary schools are sufficient. The region has many schooling facilities, why not turn one into a technical one?"" the President asked. If realised, the technical school will ensure a significant increase in the numbers of young people that possess skills relevant to the demands of the labour market, the fast-changing economy, and skills that are sustainable and can lead to either employment or self- employment. He called on the Karas leadership to urgently look into the proposed undertaking. Pohamba said that the nation has for long mourned the education system viewed by many as chaotic. He acknowledged that something is wrong with the education system but that Government is looking into the matter. Pohamba also asked leaders of the Karas Region why their people are not found in other parts of the country looking for employment. ""On unemployment I want to be frank. I have travelled to Noordoewer, Oranjemund, L??????'??" 2008-03-04Staff Report 2
