Private medical facility opens at Rundu
RUNDU - A new private medical facility Shemoun Medical Centre recently opened its doors to serve people’s health needs in Rundu where demand for quality health services - complementing public hospitals - is growing. Shemoun Medical Centre started operating on Monday. Dr Taati Ithindi who is the owner of the centre said the new facility has a doctor, four administrative support staff, a receptionist and a cleaner. “Our medical centre will also soon have a pharmacy and the registration of the pharmacy is in progress. We will also have a dentist. We are busy setting everything up as everything cannot happen at once,” said Ithindi. “The medical centre is a general practice but we will put emphasis on the mother and child. There will be antenatal, immunization and also circumcision and ultra-sound services,” Ithindi elaborated. Shemoun Medical Centre cost N$2.5 million to construct and furnish and the name was derived from Ithindi’s three daughters’ names – Shekupe, Monde and Unomwenyo. She said she was inspired to build the centre because one of her daughters Unomwenyo who was born in Rundu told her she wants to work in Rundu after graduating in medical studies. In terms of space the centre has a waiting area, a reception, six consulting rooms, patient and staff toilets, as well as facilities for the pharmacy and dentist. Dr Yuri Yangazov, the medical superintendent of the Rundu hospital, which is an intermediate referral hospital, said the new centre will give the community a choice and reduce the pressure at the government hospital as people with medical aid as well as those who can afford it will be able to use the new centre. “The population in Kavango is rapidly growing and thus the demand for medical services is skyrocketing every year, and that shows that we need more and more health service centres like this offering quality service, which should not only be delivered in public institutions but also in private institutions. The facility meets government halfway in meeting the community’s health needs. From our side as a government facility we are open to support this facility,” said Yangazov. Shemoun is the second private medical centre in Rundu. The first was Rundu Medical Centre which was opened in 2011.
